November is National Family Caregivers Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month, Caring for Older Adults & Adults with Disabilities banner graphic

Every November, the nation celebrates and recognizes the vital role of family caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month. A family caregiver is a person who provides care and assistance to a member of their family of origin or their family of choice, and it includes neighbors and friends (2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers). In Virginia alone, 980,000 people provide regular care or assistance to a family member or friend with medical or other support needs. (Valuing the Invaluable: Number of Family Caregivers, Hours, and Economic Value of Caregiving, by State, 2021 - AARP Insight on the Issues, 2023). The caregiving journey can be rewarding and enriching, however many caregivers may also experience emotional, physical, and financial strain. For example, family caregivers lose an estimated $522 billion in income each year due to caregiving. (2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers)

Family caregivers are the primary source of support for older adults and people with disabilities in the United States. They provide compassionate essential care which allows their loved ones to age with dignity in their communities. Caregivers deserve to be supported, valued, and appreciated for the important care they provide each day.

Our Fairfax Area Agency on Aging, specializing in caring for older adults and adults with disabilities, provides caregivers with evidence-based programs, educational webinars, and workshops, as well as resources and services focused on caregivers’ needs.

Photo of Caregivers Month Proclamation at Board of Supervisors Meeting

The Board of Supervisors recognized November as National Family Caregivers Month at its November 19, 2024 meeting and presented the following proclamation:

Whereas, November is National Family Caregivers Month, an important opportunity to recognize and honor the dedicated contributions of family caregivers and encourage support and gratitude for all the care they provide; and

Whereas, in the Commonwealth of Virginia, more than 980,000 people provide care on a regular basis to a family member or friend; and

Whereas, family caregivers advocate on behalf of their loved ones for aging in place at home and provide compassionate care without pay, the economic impact of which is valued at an estimated $14.3 billion in Virginia; and

Whereas, as the older adult population grows in the Commonwealth and Fairfax County, the complex and challenging nature of family caregiving can significantly impact caregivers' physical, mental and emotional well-being; and

Whereas, Fairfax County's Adult and Aging Division of the Department of Family Services offers support for family caregivers, including webinars, virtual support calls, consultations, respite and bathing services, alerts and a resource line; now therefore,

Be it resolved, that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, on behalf of all residents of Fairfax County, does hereby proclaim November 2024, as Caregivers Awareness Month,

in Fairfax County, and urges all residents to honor the service and sacrifice of our many dedicated caregivers.
