The start of the school year can be a very exciting time for children and their families. Unfortunately, it can also be overwhelming due to the high cost of school supplies – especially for families with more than one child.
School supplies are essential for every student’s academic success, so each year the Volunteer and Partner Services program strives to meet this basic need for the families and children involved with the Children, Youth and Families Division in Fairfax County Department of Family Services. This year VPS was incredibly fortunate that the Fairfax County Democratic Committee donated more than 350 backpacks full of school supplies and reusable water bottles for our families.
VPS is so grateful for this amazing donor’s benevolence in providing approximately $33,000 dollars’ worth of much needed backpacks, pencils, paper, glue sticks, crayons, and more! Volunteers with the Fairfax County Democratic Society delivered the stuffed backpacks to the DFS main office in the Government Center complex in the weeks before school began.
DFS staff delivered the backpacks directly to the families they support to make sure that the children on their caseloads were ready for the beginning of school. This took a huge load off and freed up valuable time and financial resources for these families. What a great way to start the year!
VPS would not be able to support the children in our community without our donors. If you are interested in donating to Volunteer and Partner Services to help local children and families in need, please check out ways to make an impact and send us an email.
