This school year the Department of Family Services’ Volunteer and Partner Services Program has welcomed two college interns to work with the BeFriend-a-Child Mentoring program and the Body Safety program for the 2025-2026 year. We are so happy to have them join us.
Audrey Wheeler
Audrey Wheeler is a senior at Liberty University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in social work with a minor in global studies. Born and raised in Fairfax County, Audrey is excited to give back to the community that has played such an important role in her life.
Audrey will be working with the Body Safety program this fall, contributing to efforts that support the well-being of children and families. After graduating in December, Audrey hopes to attend graduate school and continue growing as an aspiring social work professional.
Charlotte Barker
Charlotte Barker is a graduate student in the social work program at George Mason University who is excited to intern with the BeFriend-A-Child Mentoring program. Charlotte grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, and her inspiration to pursue social work started with her family.
Charlotte’s sister has a chromosomal disorder and experienced mistreatment in school. This led their mother to become a strong advocate for her sister’s rights. Their advocacy ultimately contributed to changes in Virginia’s special education program.
Awed by the power of advocacy, Charlotte was inspired to pursue social work and make a difference for those who may not have a voice of their own. In her free time, Charlotte enjoys reading with her cat and exploring the area by checking out new trails and restaurants.
Welcome Aboard!
The interns kicked off their time with the program by attending the Body Safety Orientation which allowed them to share a meal with some of the volunteers and experience the curriculum during a lively demo. Be on the lookout for these eager and hardworking additions to the team. Join us in welcoming them!
