At the Department of Family Services, we believe extraordinary work begins with extraordinary people. This was evident during last month’s annual Volunteer Body Safety Program Facilitator Orientation sessions. We gathered 50 passionate individuals, including interns, seasoned volunteers, and new members to review the program’s mission and work to prevent and interrupt child abuse.
We conducted two orientation sessions, one in English and the other in Spanish, reflecting our diverse volunteer base and community. This approach empowered all participants to feel confident in their roles as facilitators, preparing them for scenarios they might face in the classroom. Our bilingual volunteers bring a vital ability to connect with children in ways that feel familiar and supportive, amplifying our ability to serve the Fairfax County community effectively.
Learning in Action
Each session began with a working lunch that provided an opportunity new and seasoned volunteers to meet and develop relationships. Afterward staff launched into training modules.
The training was creative and dynamic. It covered the basics of how to teach children about setting boundaries and recognizing uncomfortable touch and unsafe situations. For seasoned volunteers, it was a good refresher, and for newcomers, it provided essential preparation for the months ahead.
One very satisfied volunteer said they appreciated, “the clear and great way the material was presented. Interacting with seasoned Body Safety volunteers and hearing questions from new volunteers.”
Experienced facilitators supported the training by mentoring first-timers. They shared their insights, reflected on what keeps them involved year after year, and told stories with humor that kept everyone engaged. An active demonstration with role plays featured various facilitation styles and hammered home the point that there is no single right way to teach the curriculum.
