At least one pool operator with a valid certificate must be on the premises while a water recreation facility is operating.
A pool operator must:
- Be 16 years of age or older.
- Have passed a pool operator exam within the last three years.
- Have a valid pool operator certificate.
- Demonstrate knowledge and be able to take the necessary actions to address aquatic health and safety issues.
Get a Pool Operator Certificate
You can get a pool operator certificate by passing an exam accepted by the Health Department. Formal training is not required to get a certificate, but is recommended. Apply through the Planning and Land Use System (PLUS) for recognition as a pool operator course and exam provider.
Approved Pool Operator Course and Exam Providers
The Fairfax County Health Department has approved these pool operator course and exam providers. Providers must apply to be accepted and certify that their course and/or exam adequately covers primary teaching elements outlined in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Model Aquatic Health Code, ยง6.1 Qualified Operator Training.
