Field Use: Eligibility and Permits

Permits are required for field users of 20 or more people (including spectators).
Obtaining a permit is the ONLY way to guarantee a field will be available for you to use.

The Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) schedules and handles the permitting for the use of fields at Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) facilities for leagues, organizations and groups of individuals during times designated for community use:

  • Monday through Friday, 5 PM to dark (11 p.m. on lighted fields)
  • Saturday and Sunday, 8 AM to dark (11 p.m. on lighted fields)
*Some lighted fields may have earlier lights out times. Please contact our office for details and for instructions on operating lights

While open walk-ons are allowed when fields are vacant, non-permitted groups are required to leave the field if an appropriately permitted group arrives for their scheduled field use time. Permits are the only way to ensure your "right" to use a field during a designated time.

Any for-profit athletic organizations; groups seeking to use fields for fundraising activities, camps or clinics; or those seeking to use fields outside of community use time, must contact the property owner (FCPS or FCPA) to arrange for field use and will be subject to the owner's rental policies and fees.

Field Allocation

NCS is guided by the county's Field Allocation Policy and the Turf Field Allocation Guidelines which dictate the order groups are to be scheduled and how much space is available to be allotted.
