The Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) supports quality early childhood education programs for children at risk for school failure. Families with income at or below 350% of the Federal Poverty Level, with children who are three or four years old by Sept. 30 of the school year and who live in Fairfax County or the City of Fairfax are eligible for participation in VPI.
Children are also eligible if they meet any of the following criteria:
- Eligible for special education services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, regardless of household income, and has an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
- Has parents or guardians who did not complete high school.
- Experiencing homelessness.
- Under a Child Protective Service order.
- Lives in a foster care home.
- Lives with a teen parent(s).
- Has a parent who is incarcerated.
VPI supports children's school readiness through:
- Quality early childhood education programs with VDOE-approved curricula.
- Health, mental health, dental and developmental screenings and follow-up as needed.
- Experiences that result in smooth transitions to kindergarten.
Programs partner with families to provide:
- Workshops and events that engage families in their children's early education experiences.
- Literacy programs.
- Resource materials.
Early childhood professionals participating in VPI receive support through:
- Ongoing professional development.
- On-site visits, coaching, and technical assistance.
- Classroom supplies that support engaging learning environments, quality adult-child interactions, and curriculum implementation.
