The Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) internship program is designed to increase community engagement in park, recreation, natural, cultural, historical and/or business operations professions while providing an additional pathway for potential employees interested in serving in seasonal, part-time, and full-time positions at FCPA. FCPA offers both paid and unpaid internship opportunities.
Interested applicants are encouraged to explore and apply for open internship opportunities. If you are interested in a business area that does not currently have an internship advertised, please reach out to FCPAInternships@fairfaxcounty.gov.
The FCPA internship program will offer three general internship sessions per calendar year: Spring, Summer, and Fall. However, applicants may be awarded an internship outside of a general session on an as needed basis. The duration of each session will not exceed 4 months. FCPA will accept applications on a rolling basis for each session based on the following schedule. Paid interns work hours may vary based on site location or position. Paid interns are expected to maintain at least 20 hours of availability and up to 40 hours a week.
SESSION | START | END |
Spring | February | May |
Summer | May | August |
Fall | September | December |
The Park Authority intern program affords each intern opportunities for both career enhancement and personal growth. These benefits include:
Resume Building: Park Authority Internships provide the experience and benefit of having worked for an award-winning organization with a nationally known and respected reputation.
Results Oriented Work Experience: The program is structured to provide each intern with a visible end product and a sense of pride and accomplishment, as well as an important building block for your resume.
The Park Authority believes an intern program should be mutually beneficial to both the intern and the organization. Our intention is to provide students with an experience that fosters both professional growth and self-expression. In return, we expect you to have good core work habits – strong communication skills, a demonstrated ability to effectively complete assignments and knowledge which is sufficient to adequately carry out and complete your internship project. FCPA can benefit from your enthusiasm and project support which allows us to accomplish tasks that may not otherwise receive timely completion.
