Invasive Plants

Invasive plants have qualities that allow them to quickly crowd out native plants in neighborhoods, parks, roadsides and waterways. They tend to produce large amounts of seeds, grow very fast and have few natural predators. Some invasive plants commonly sold in nurseries quickly spread beyond their intended area if not properly managed. Their fast spread makes them hard to control. We need your help to protect Fairfax County from invasive plants.

• Running Bamboo: Learn about the damage it causes and how to contain it or remove it from your property.
• Two-horned Trapa: A growing problem in stormwater ponds and other waterbodies.
• Tree-of-heaven: A favorite plant of the invasive Spotted Lanternfly. Report any sightings.

The Early Detection and Rapid Response program works to find and remove new invasive plants before they cause major harm in county parks.
