Using the Childhelp® Speak Up Be Safe curriculum, The Body Safety program helps to educate and empower children about their own bodies. It teaches children five Body Safety rules to help children understand boundaries and healthy relationships.
This evidence-based curriculum can reduce the risk of children becoming victims of abuse. Class instructors talk about four distinct types of abuse: physical, emotional, abuse with private body parts, and neglect.
The Body Safety program offers classes in various Fairfax County Public Schools and community organizations. Classes are also available virtually (using Zoom or MS Teams) to any children living in Fairfax County.
Body Safety program staff is grateful to have created a wonderful partnership with SafeSpot Children’s Advocacy Center in Fairfax County, an organization that works to reduce the trauma experienced by child abuse victims.
SafeSpot provides its services at no cost to clients and cases are reviewed by a group of professionals, that include, law enforcement, prosecutors, interviewers, social workers, medical and mental health professionals, victim assistance staff, and child advocates.
Through this partnership, SafeSpot refers children to our Body Safety Program for virtual classes, each family may schedule a class based on their availability. Adult family members are also welcome to participate in the classes that are offered in English or Spanish and families receive tips and talking points to review the information with their children.
The lessons include discussions of different age-appropriate scenarios where children can apply the different safety rules. This helps children understand and remember what they have learned.
During this year, SafeSpot has referred over 30 children to our Body Safety virtual classes! We truly hope to continue with this partnership to keep supporting and working together for the families in Fairfax County.
