The Parenting Education Programs recently hosted a full-day training for eight new volunteers excited to support our parenting classes across Fairfax County. This training is an important first step in preparing volunteers to assist parents, caregivers, and children in building stronger, healthier family relationships.
The training was highly interactive. Volunteers participated in activities, discussions, and even a mock class session that allowed them to experience a real-life classroom scenario from the perspective of both facilitator and participant.
Volunteers engaged with current PEP facilitators. They learned firsthand the class structure, what is expected in the classroom, and effective ways to positively engage and support both children and caregivers.
What is PEP?
The Parenting Education Programs are based on the philosophy that parenting is learned, and the way parents were raised directly influences the way they raise their children. Our parenting classes are designed to help parents and caregivers:
- Learn and practice healthy parenting strategies.
- Build and maintain family strengths and positive values.
- Develop respectful, nurturing relationships between adults and children.
Class topics include routines, consequences, and positive discipline, with a focus on promoting children’s self-worth, cooperation, independence, and sense of responsibility. Learn more from this video.
Volunteers are essential to the success of these programs. They help create welcoming, supportive class environments that encourage parents, youth, and children to learn and grow together.
