This summer, the Parenting Education Programs welcomed six new volunteers to the team supporting parenting education classes. The volunteers weren’t sure exactly what to expect, but they came ready to learn!
In a day-long training the volunteers learned about the program’s history and its mission to teach positive and effective ways parents can interact with their children at every age and stage of development.
The training was highly interactive, featuring:
- Hands-on activities.
- Lively discussions.
- A mock class with real-life classroom scenarios.
Marcus Garr, PEP supervisor explained, “this training allows our trainees to experience the class structure, know what is expected in the classroom, and understand effective ways to positively engage and support children and caregivers.”
At the end of the day, the group was excited to receive their certificates of completion allowing them to support ongoing classes. And since the training, the volunteers have been a great benefit to the program and the families taking our classes.

Nina Carcamo a new volunteer noted, “The training gave me a great feel for not only all the resources that are available to these families, but the impact we make … in helping families better understand how to be present for the children and their needs. I instantly felt like a member of the team!”
Rahwa Weldemichael shared that, "Volunteering with the Parenting Education Programs has been an incredibly rewarding journey. More than just giving my time, I truly enjoyed getting to know the unique personalities of the children and parents and collaborating with the dedicated staff.” She went on to add, “My favorite moments were spent chatting with the older kids—sharing fresh ideas, listening to their perspectives, and helping guide them toward making positive choices."
Volunteers are essential to the success of our programs. They help create welcoming, supportive class environments that encourage parents, youth, and children to learn and grow together.
