Administrative & Office Support - No current opportunities

Child Care & Early Childhood Education

Salary: $18.50 - $22.00 (based upon experience)

Status: Temporary/Part-time (Grade S08) – No benefits

Location: Gum Springs - 7839 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22306

Description: Under the supervision of a Childcare Specialist III, providing supervision of children under their care.  Assists in supervising the safety and well-being of the children. Monitors classroom and outdoor playground materials and equipment using establish safety checklists.  Engages children in age-appropriate experience.  Develops age-appropriate experiential curriculum and adjusts the environment according to the children’s individual needs. Promotes an inclusive setting for all children. Follows all procedures for the prevention of health hazards and ensures the safety of children, performs developmental screening and assessments, assists in the preparation of documentation for local agency, state licensing and federal Head Start performance standards. Interacts with county staff, citizens and members of the childcare community. Works as a cooperative member of a team.  Provides feedback to supervisors on program goals and participates in problem solving.  Performs lead duties in the absence of Childcare Specialist III.   Actively participates in all training.  Supports Head Start philosophy and performance standards. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a Child Development associate in early childhood education (CDA-infant and toddler) or course work in early childhood, or a related field plus one year of related work experience.

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry and a tuberculosis (TB). Must be able to move quickly in order to respond to situations. You must be able to lift to 35 pounds.

Work Schedule: This position is scheduled to work an average of 17.3 hours per week – 52 weeks per year not to exceed 900 hours per calendar year.  Hours are generally within the core county business hours of 8:00am-4:30pm with the opportunity for work in the evenings and weekends.

Community Centers (Youth, Teen, and Adult)

Salary: $25.4296–$34.9657 per hour (based on experience)

Location: Various locations in Herndon, Reston, Fairfax, Tyson’s and McLean

Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services is seeking a creative, engaging, and energetic Arts and Crafts Instructor III to facilitate leisure classes for adults and older adults at community and senior centers throughout Fairfax County.

Description: The instructor will plan and facilitate classes in one or more of the following areas:

  • Traditional art: Painting, drawing, sketching, and other visual art techniques
  • Crafts: Jewelry making, sewing, knitting, crocheting, origami, and other creative projects
  • Seasonal crafts: Holiday- and seasonally-themed projects, such as ornaments, decorations, and other crafts

Responsibilities include:

  • Plans, develops, and implements engaging arts and crafts programs in a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Leads, teaches, and demonstrates techniques and activities appropriate to participants' skill levels and abilities.
  • Helps participants develop skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, and problem-solving.
  • Structures class time to provide both individual instruction and group lessons and activities.
  • Prepares appropriate materials, supplies, and handouts for each class.
  • Assists participants, answers questions, and creates a positive and inclusive class experience.
  • Ensures that safety standards are met and that department and facility policies and procedures are followed.
  • Monitors arts and crafts trends and participant interests to help ensure programming meets the needs of the community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience providing arts instruction or facilitating arts and crafts classes in an individual or group setting.
  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to an associate degree or higher.
  • Excellent interpersonal, instructional, and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and effectively instruct and engage participants in both individual and group settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience working in a community center, senior center, recreation, or similar setting.
  • Experience providing arts- or crafts-based instruction to adults and/or older adults.
  • Experience developing and coordinating a variety of arts and crafts classes or programs.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills.

Certificates and Licenses:

Valid motor vehicle driver's license.

Physical Requirements:

Work is generally sedentary. Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and operate keyboard-driven equipment. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Work Schedule: Weekday mornings and/or afternoons

The Burke-Springfield Center for Active Adults is seeking qualified ZUMBA instructors to provide fitness classes for our active adult community (ages 50+). We are looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate, and reliable individual with a passion for promoting the health, wellness, and social engagement of older adults.

This position focuses on enhancing participants' physical well-being through exercise, movement, and social connection.

Position Description: The instructor will develop, facilitate, and lead multiple classes for diverse participants, with a primary focus on active adults (ages 50+).

Responsibilities include:

  • Instruct and lead multiple forms of ZUMBA, including ZUMBA Gold, ZUMBA Toning, ZUMBA Gold Toning, and related formats.
  • Provide aerobic fitness instruction, including high-impact aerobics with or without weights, for adults seeking to improve their health and well-being.
  • Design and cultivate classes that engage both experienced ZUMBA participants and individuals beginning their fitness journey.
  • Prepare, inspect, and maintain personal and group equipment before and after use.
  • Accurately document classes and complete class-related paperwork and incident reports.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, the center director, and participants.
  • Provide excellent customer service.
  • Demonstrate appreciation for and respect for the diversity of our community and clientele.
  • Primarily serve individuals ages 50+, while supporting other community locations and populations as needed within the geographic service area.
  • Perform other duties assigned based on agency and county needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Create a welcoming environment that promotes safety, independence, and participation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and abilities in the relevant area of expertise.
  • Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and a strong commitment to participant safety.
  • Possess at least two years of experience in the specialty area.
  • Ability to travel within the region to provide services, teach classes, and accept substitute teaching assignments as needed.
  • Be comfortable performing basic administrative tasks, including data tracking, scanning, and using digital tools and software.
  • Ability to train and mentor instructors to teach additional classes
  • Ability to teach multiple fitness class formats.
  • Experience working with diverse populations in an inclusive environment and adapting activities and classes to meet varying participant needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow structured curricula and manage class logistics.
  • Experience leading engaging fitness classes that promote physical health and social interaction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with County staff and effectively utilize department resources to support program success.

Certificates and Licenses:

Certification through a recognized professional organization in the applicable area of expertise and/or a degree in a related field.

Physical Requirements:

This position is active in nature and requires the ability to monitor and observe program participants. The incumbent regularly moves about and positions themselves to supervise and interact with participants. The position occasionally requires lifting, transporting, positioning, pushing, pulling, or moving up to 50 pounds.

The incumbent must possess sufficient mobility and range of motion to perform repetitive standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, sitting on the floor, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting. The ability to respond quickly to the physical actions of participants is required.

The position also requires the ability to administer CPR and First Aid when necessary and respond appropriately to emergency situations. Administrative duties require the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. The incumbent must be sufficiently mobile to attend meetings and make presentations at various County and community locations.

Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services is seeking an energetic, knowledgeable, and engaging Fitness and Wellness Instructor III to facilitate fitness and wellness programs for adults ages 50 and older at NCS Senior Centers and community partner locations. These locations include Herndon Senior Center, Lewinsville Senior Center, Jim Scott Community Center, and Arbor Row Center.

Position Description: Under the direct supervision of the region’s Human Development Manager, the instructor will plan and lead programs designed to promote healthy aging, improve strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, and encourage social connection. The instructor will help create a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive environment for participants of varying fitness levels and abilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans and facilitates engaging fitness and wellness classes focused on improving functional strength, balance, mobility, flexibility, and cardiovascular health. Programs may include SAIL (Stay Active and Independent for Life), A Matter of Balance, Tai Chi for Arthritis, functional strength and stability, stretching and balance with yoga-inspired elements, and other evidence-based fitness and wellness programs for older adults.
  • Leads evidence-based programs designed to promote healthy aging, physical activity, independence, and social connection.
  • Demonstrates exercises and techniques while providing clear and appropriate instruction to participants.
  • Adapts exercises and activities to accommodate varying fitness levels and participant needs while promoting safety and accessibility.

  • Excellent interpersonal, instructional, and communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and effectively instruct and engage participants in both individual and group settings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of experience working in a community center, senior center, recreation, fitness, wellness, or similar setting.

Description: Instructor will develop, instruct, facilitate, multiple classes for diverse participants focusing on adults aged 18-49, teens aged 15-18 and occasionally the older adults 50 + population. 

  • Experience in aerobic instruction, high impact aerobics with or without weights for adults looking to improve their health and wellbeing, Zumba, and yoga along with creating and facilitating aerobic classes for teens to help those who are just beginning their fitness journey.
  • Prepare and inspect personal and group equipment, before and after use.
  • Accurately document classes, organize class-related paperwork and incidents reports.
  • Maintain strong communication with staff, center director and participants.
  • Provides excellent customer service skills.
  • Other duties as assigned based upon agency and county needs.
