Kings Manor Neighborhood Stormwater Improvements

Dranesville, Project #SD-000032-129

Project Update: December 16, 2024

Survey is underway. The survey results will be used to develop a drainage assessment capacity analysis. The analysis is scheduled for completion in March 2025.

Project Background

The proposed flood improvement project is in the Dead Run watershed within the Kings Manor neighborhood. During recent major rainfall events the existing stormwater conveyance system was overwhelmed and many homes experienced structural flooding.

Project Description

The neighborhood stormwater improvement project will evaluate and mitigate structural flooding in the vicinity of the Kings Manor neighborhood and within an 80 acres drainage area that leads to the local stream, Dead Run.

The primary goals of this project are to:

  • Reduce localized flooding and erosion
  • Address public safety concerns
  • Improve stormwater drainage conditions and infrastructure
  • Improve water quality and protect the local stream
  • Use an innovative, sustainable and functional design
  • Partner with the community to develop sound, cost effective solutions that can be collaboratively implemented and maintained

Project Location

The project lies within the Dead Run watershed and is located south of Baron Road in the Dranesville District of Fairfax County. The proposed drainage area for the Kings Manor neighborhood is approximately 80 acres of land that drain to Dead Run.

Project Benefits

The benefits of this project include:

  • Improve the drainage system and reduce localized flooding in the community
  • Address public safety concerns
  • Protect Dead Run, the local stream

Documents and Notices

We plan to host a public meeting next spring to discuss drainage analysis and potential design with the community.

What To Expect

As the project advances through the iterative design development process, community meetings will be scheduled to present the project and its design to the residents along the project and receive feedback from the community. Meetings will be scheduled for a concept design, 95 percent design, 100 percent design/pre-construction, and post-construction.

Project Cost and Funding Sources

The design of the Kings Manor Neighborhood Stormwater (STW) Improvements is funded for $348,000. Construction funding is dependent upon future budget availability and allocations. Stormwater projects are funded through the county Stormwater Service District.
