Report Streetlight Outage

Reporting an outage is easier than ever and helps keeps neighborhoods safe; it also helps keep pedestrians visible and safe.

Streetlights along public roadways in Fairfax County are typically maintained by Dominion Virginia Power or the Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC). The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) operates the streetlights along interstates and at major interchanges.

You may contact any of these providers directly to report outages or issues. When reporting an outage to Dominion Virginia Power or NOVEC, you will need to have the location of the pole and the pole number (More information on reading pole numbers).

  • Dominion Virginia Power: Call 1-866-DOM-HELP (366-4357), TTY 711

Dominion Virginia Power uses a coding system when responding to repair orders where the problem cannot be resolved on the first visit. If further work is required to correct the problem, a color-coded tag is wrapped around the light post: blue (overhead repair is required), green (underground repair is necessary), and yellow (underground cable is damaged and needs repair).

  • NOVEC: Call 703-335-0500, TTY 711
  • If the Streetlight is located at a major interchange you will need to contact VDOT.

Streetlight Outage at Major Interchanges or a Traffic Light Problem: Call VDOT: 1-800-FOR-ROAD (1-800-367-7623), TTY 711

  • If a streetlight is located on a private road, it is the responsibility of the light's owner (the homeowner's association, for instance) to relay the report to the power supplier.

Steps to report an outage on the Fairfax County Streetlight Reporting Map

Fairfax County has created a new Streetlight Reporting Map to make it easier to identify pole numbers and report streetlight outages from your desktop or mobile device. The Streetlight Reporting Map shows streetlight service areas and individual streetlight locations and pole numbers in Fairfax County. You can now use your phone's GPS location to find pole numbers and report outages in your neighborhood and in other areas you frequent.

  1. Enter address or intersection near the streetlight, then click search. If you are on your mobile device, you can click the "Find My Location" button to go to your phone's GPS location.
  2. Use the map to find the malfunctioning streetlight. You may need to zoom in or out to see the nearby street lights.
  3. Move your mouse over the streetlight dot symbol and click the "Click here to report a problem with this street light" link in the pop up
  4. Complete and submit the form to report the issue.

Mobile users may wish to use the map in full screen for best results.

You will see a message confirming your report has been sent to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services. Streetlight staff will forward the report to the appropriate utility provider for their repair.

Still Cannot Find the Pole Number?

  • The streetlight is privately owned or on a private road. In this case, the corresponding private owner (for example, HOA) has to report the outage to power company.
  • If the Streetlight is located at a major interchange you will need to contact VDOT.
  • Pole and light may have not been identified in inventory. In this case, please email Department of Public Works by clicking and filling out the form or call 703-324-5111, TTY 711, to have the Streetlight department assist you

If you need additional information or assistance, please email Department of Public Works by clicking and filling out the form or call 703-324-5111, TTY 711, to have the Streetlight department assist you.
