Car washes in Fairfax County must follow wastewater and plumbing rules in the County Code (Chapter 67.1 and Chapter 65-6-11). These rules help protect the sewer system and the environment.
Car washes must:
- Prevent sand, mud, grease, and oil from entering the sewer system
- Use a County-approved water recycling system
- Keep petroleum-based oil and grease below 100 mg/L in wastewater
Most car washes are required to install a grit trap or oil/water separator to meet these requirements.
Facilities That Cannot Discharge to the Sewer
Car washes that are not allowed to discharge wastewater to the sanitary sewer must contact the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ). VDEQ can provide information about coverage under the General VPDES Permit for Vehicle Wash and Laundry Facilities.
State-Owned Properties
Car wash facilities located on state-owned property must follow state plumbing requirements. For more information, contact the Virginia Division of Engineering and Buildings at 804-786-3581.
