Environmental Monitoring

Lab technicianEcosystem monitoring is done in and around Pohick Creek and Gunston Cove to check how cleaned wastewater, or effluent, affects the environment. This program has been running for over 30 years. It looks at water quality, the types and numbers of living things in the area, and how diverse species are.

The monitoring has shown many improvements in Gunston Cove’s water quality and environment. For example, there have been high numbers of fish reproducing. There is also a large increase in underwater plants. These changes have happened mostly because the county improved its wastewater treatment process.

Scientists check the health of the ecosystem to spot changes and make decisions as needed. Keeping the water healthy lets people enjoy activities like boating, fishing, water skiing, and windsurfing in Gunston Cove.
