Not sure what kind of tree that is? These tools will help you find the species of tree which will help you find information on how to properly care for it. Consider some of the most common tree species encountered in Fairfax County when using these tools.

Virginia Department of Forestry

Virginia Department of Forestry has resources including books and fact sheets you can find by visiting Publications and Reports.  One helpful identification guide is the Department of Forestry's Tree Identification. To purchase identification books, visit Buy an Identification Book.

vTree

Virginia Tech has developed the vTree app that can narrow the list of potential tree or shrub species based on your GPS location and simple questions about the tree or shrub.  The app can be downloaded for free on your mobile device and is available for both Android and iPhone.

You can also use the ID Keys at Virginia Tech Dendrology. The webpage includes a review of the basics of tree identification and several options (leaf key, twig key, or interview) for figuring out an unknown tree or shrub.

iNaturalist

Download the free iNaturalist app to your mobile device, available for both Android and iPhone. You will have to create a free profile to begin. You will be able to take photos of plants and insects and get suggestions on what species they may be.

Tree of Heaven - Report It

The exotic and invasive tree of heaven (Ailanthus alsima) is the preferred host of the invasive insect pest, spoed lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula). Fairfax County urban foresters want your help to locate and report observations of the invasive tree of heaven.

Become a first detector in the fight against spotted lanternfly! The Mid-Atlantic Early Detection Network (MAEDN) is a mobile application used to report invasive species. Tree of heaven location reports can be made directly in the app. Download the brochure to learn in details.
