Historic Environmental Policies

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has enacted several policies and initiatives designed to advance environmentally sound and energy efficient activities at the county level and beyond. Some environmental policies have reached the end of their implementation phases or have been superseded by newer plans or policies.

This page provides information on historic environmental and sustainability policies and initiatives for Fairfax County. To explore current plans, policies, and initiatives, visit our Climate Plans, Policies, and Initiatives webpage.

Sustainability Initiatives

The Fairfax County Sustainability Initiatives report gives an overview of the county's many environmental sustainability and stewardship projects and programs. The last issue was published in Fiscal Year 2022.

Fairfax Green Initiatives

In February 2019, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a joint board matter on Fairfax Green Initiatives, a declaration of environmental priorities for the county with implementation guidance for staff. In July 2020, the Board adopted a follow-on motion with additional environment and energy-related action items. These Fairfax Green Initiatives action items are no longer being tracked separately but as part of the implementation of the Community-wide Energy and Climate Action Plan.

Joint Environmental Task Force

In 2019, the Joint Environmental Task Force, or JET, was formed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and the Fairfax County School Board. The JET's mission was to join the political and administrative capabilities of the county and the school system to proactively address climate change and environmental sustainability.

Cool Counties

In 2007, the Board of Supervisors signed the Cool Counties Climate Stabilization Declaration, setting in motion a national effort to reduce global warming emissions.
