A Typical Day at Adult Day Health Care

Staff member helping ADHC participant with craft

Throughout the day, your loved one will engage in meaningful activities tailored to their interests and cognitive and physical abilities – everything from music, crafts, dancing, adaptive sports, pet therapy, gardening and even field trips. Exercise is also part of their daily routine as well as a nutritional breakfast, lunch and snack. And our staff – as well as the other participants – offers the friendship and companionship that makes ADHC a true "home away from home."

Thumbnail of sample scheduleThe activities at Adult Day Health Care Centers are designed by a certified recreation therapist (RT), who is trained to provide recreational activities to individuals with cognitive and physical impairments. The goal is to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the participants.

The RT selects the activities based on the abilities and interests of the participants in order to achieve a balance between exercise, rest, mental stimulation, creativity and fun. Download a sample daily schedule from one of our centers.

In addition, participants enjoy outside entertainers, seasonal field trips, parties and special events throughout the year. Here are some examples of field trips taken in the past:

  • Visit the cherry blossoms when in bloom in D.C.
  • Lunch and tour on the Spirit of Washington cruise
  • Trip to a theatrical production
  • Trip to the National Arboretum
  • Ice cream outings

We provide a well-balanced breakfast, lunch and snack. Meals are approved by a dietician and we can accommodate special dietary needs in most cases. If dietary supplements are recommended, families can send in supplies from home which will be labeled for that individual's use.

Lunch and dinner menus include tasty dishes such as French toast, omelets, pot roast and salmon. Download a sample menu. Although there is no separate charge for the meals, donations are accepted to offset the cost of Fairfax County's subsidy for the meals.
