The Volunteer Fire and Rescue Training program (VFRTP) has a number of vacancies for the Instructor III position at the Fire and Rescue Academy (FRA).  Instructors provide certified instruction for FRA sponsored training activities.  The Volunteer Training Program operates primarily Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings from 1900-2300, and Saturdays and Sundays from 0800-1600.  This position reports to the Volunteer Training Coordinator or the Volunteer Liaison (Community Emergency Response Team [CERT] program manager).

The Instructor III positions for the Volunteer Training Program are exempt status (G) positions (Non-merit).  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of FEMA’s CERT curriculum and the Hazard Annex.
  • Overseeing and conducting operations-based CERT exercises and tabletop exercises.
  • Delivering offsite training will require operating a vehicle with a light trailer.
  • Assisting in various special training projects for the CERT Program
  • Delivery of initial EMT-B practical skills training working under a certified Virginia Emergency Medical Services Education Standards (VEMSES) instructor.
  • Delivery of EMT refresher practical skills training.
  • Delivery of American Heart Association CPR for Healthcare Providers initial and renewal training.
  • Delivery of NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and II certification classroom and practical skills training.
  • Overseeing and conducting live fire training exercises.
  • Delivery of suppression related training to incumbent firefighters.
  • Operating Fire and Rescue Academy vehicles and equipment.
  • Lead and assist in the delivery of entry level Fire and Rescue Academy training, Level 1.
  • Work as an assistant with EVOC practical testing.
  • Assisting in various special training projects for volunteer training.

Minimum Qualifications:

For Firefighter and EMT Instructor: 

  • VA EMT-B or higher, with at least two years’ experience as an EMS provider. 
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I/II with at least 2 years active minimum staffing experience. 
  • NFPA 1041 Instructor I certified. 
  • VDFP-FST NFPA 1403 Awareness.
  • VDFP-FST NFPA 1001-08 Firefighter I and II Train the Trainer. 
  • VDFP-FST Mayday Awareness Train the Trainer.

For EMT Instructor: 

  • VA EMT-B or higher, with at least two years of experience as an EMS provider. 
  • National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor I and II or NFPA 1041 Instructor I certified.

For CERT Instructor:

  • VA EMT-B or higher, with at least two years of experience as an EMS provider.
  • Emergency Management Institute course E0428, CERT Train the Trainer, prior certification or completion within 12 months of employment.
  • National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators (NAEMSE) Instructor I and II or NFPA 1041 Instructor I certified.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven ability as a lead instructor.
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter I and II with at least 2 years active minimum staffing experience. 
  • Volunteer Firemen’s Insurance Services or Emergency Vehicle Driver Training instructor.
  • Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services, EMS Education Coordinator.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support instructor.
  • Experience with Microsoft computer based instructional programs including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven ability as a lead instructor.
  • NFPA 1041 Instructor II certification.
  • Driver Pump Operator VDFP certification or Fairfax County equivalent. 
  • National Fire Academy Incident Safety Officer.
  • 1403 Compliance officer.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of two years of study and training at an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in early childhood or elementary education, nursing, recreation, or a related field plus one year of related work experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Major course work in early childhood education. Experience working with groups of children. Bilingual ability.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a high school or G.E.D. issued by a state department of education, Level II USGTF Instructor with experience teaching golf lessons. Must be at least 21 years old.

Spring Hill Recreation Center is seeking a Preschool Program Aide who will operate under the direction of the Preschool Director to assist with the Kid’s Play for Preschoolers program and other preschool aged programs.

Kid’s Play for Preschoolers is a program established to provide a safe and nurturing environment where children can develop emotionally, socially and intellectually through appropriate experiences. Children are encouraged to learn through hands-on activities and staff are expected to help children learn independence and to develop a positive self-image.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Assisting the lead teachers in daily tasks, such as setting up the necessary supplies for arts and crafts or special activities; maintaining a neat, attractive, clean and orderly environment including shelves, closets, cubbies and tables; communicating with parents as necessary.  Ability to temporarily take over programs while the Director is away. Works as part of a team with other staff members.

Minimum Qualifications:  Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma and demonstrated early childhood experience. First Aid and CPR certifications and a negative TB test are required prior to the start date. The appointee must maintain training hours per Virginia licensing requirements. This job is contingent upon satisfactory results of a criminal background check, which will require the candidate to be fingerprinted.
