Under supervision and within the guidelines of a VASAP-approved curriculum, the group leaders prepare and instruct a 10-hour or 8-hour alcohol and/or drug and driver education program appropriate to the classification level for the class. They are responsible for implementing several Fairfax County ASAP policies and procedures. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, counseling, or related field, plus one year of graduate study and two years of experience in leading psych educational programs. Knowledge of classroom techniques and knowledge of substance abuse and its personal and societal effects is a must. Under direct guidance of Old Firehouse Management this position is responsible for direct supervision of teens and “tweens” in a recreation setting and off-site field trips during the summer program.  Counselors ensure a safe and fun environment in and out of the building while encouraging personal growth within participants. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Act as an integral part of a team providing exceptional customer service to all who enter the Old Firehouse.
  • Provide direct supervision to participants to ensure safety, while promoting fun and encouraging positive interaction and relationship development.  
  • Counselors act as young adult role models for impressionable youth.
  • Prepare recreational facilities for participant use and report any safety deficiencies to Old Firehouse Management.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • 21 years old
  • 1 year of experience in a recreation setting coordinating and implementing recreational programs. 
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid state driver’s license with no more than 5 demerit points. 
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.

Under the direction of the Lifelong Learning Program Director, the instructor teaches English as a Second Language (ESL) conversational skills to the older adult population, ages 55 and older. The position exercises a high level of independent judgement in planning and organizing the program activities in their area of expertise.  The instructor develops the course outline and individual session lesson plans and teaches course content in accordance with RCC policies; maintains a safe positive learning environment for students in a teaching setting; ensures the proper care and security of RCC equipment and facilities; communicates with Lifelong Learning Director  on a regular basis to insure that patron or course problems are addressed in a timely manner; and interacts with public in a positive manner to promote RCC public relations and service delivery.  

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop lesson plans according to approved course outline and advertised content;
  • Provide written descriptions of course content to Lifelong Learning Director for preparation of publicity materials;
  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to the beginning of each class to ascertain that the classroom space is correctly set up and is safe for the participants;
  • Begin and end classes on time;
  • Monitor and supervise students in class and immediately address any medical emergencies or concerns that may arise to the Lifelong Learning Director;
  • Report patron medical emergencies or incidents that occur during class, as well as property damage or other acts of vandalism, using RCC Incident Report forms within 24 hours;
  • Ensure the proper use, care, and security of RCC equipment and facilities;
  • Talk with participants or interested members of the public in a positive manner;
  • Promote Reston Community Center programming through referral of patrons to other RCC staff when questions extend beyond the instructor’s area of expertise;
  • Assist with administering RCC class evaluation forms at the end of each class;
  • Refer requests for refunds, transfers, suggestions and complaints to the Lifelong Learning Director; 
  • Notify the Lifelong Learning Director and receive approval a minimum of four hours prior to class if they will have a substitute instructor. Substitute instructors must be existing RCC Exempt Employees or RCC registered volunteers;
  • If unable to arrange for a substitute due to a sudden illness or an emergency, must report their situation to the Lifelong Learning Director as soon as possible prior to the start of class;
  • If the instructor fails to arrange for a substitute, he/she must notify all students of a class cancellation;
  • Verify attendance, telephone numbers and email addresses at the first class.  Class participants not listed must be reported to Lifelong Learning Director and referred to the RCC Customer Service manager;
  • Exhibit knowledge of RCC evacuation and Shelter In Place (SIP) procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from college and certification in a specialized field such as education, recreation, and/or language skills;  
  • Self-motivated and exercises a high level of independent judgment and good communication skills in individual or group settings;
  • Must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

  • At least 2 years experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL);

The instructor is responsible for supply inventory and must notify the supervising RCC Program Director of any supply, equipment and audio-visual needs. Whether serving as a Woodshop Instructor or an Open Woodshop Lab Supervisor, this position exercises a high level of independent judgment in safety, planning and supervision of participants. The candidate must have thorough knowledge and experience working with a variety of woodshop equipment and demonstrate the proper use, maintenance, and safe handling of all power tools and handheld tools used in the woodshop.  This position generally works 4-8 hours per week. The typical schedule includes weekend (i.e. Saturday) and weekday evening hours. Work is generally active, and the employee will be required to travel by car, walk to sites, load, unload, and carry supplies up to 30lbs.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Experience with woodcraft and using hand-held tools and power equipment.
  • Preferable experience teaching in small group setting.
  • Preferable certification or completion of classes in a specialized field related to woodworking or other visual arts programs.
