Job Objectives
Under direct guidance of the Old Firehouse Management this position is responsible for direct supervision of teens and “tweens” in a recreation setting, off-site field trips and summer programs. Facilitators research, create and implement appropriate recreation and leisure program experiences for the teens of the community while ensuring a safe and fun environment and continually encouraging personal growth within participants.

Essential Functions:

  • Act as an integral part of a team providing exceptional customer service to all who enter the Old Firehouse.
  • Provide direct supervision to participants to ensure safety, while promoting fun and encouraging positive interaction and relationship development.
  • Facilitators work at Old Firehouse and McLean Community Center events and programs, not limited to nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Facilitators act as role models for impressionable youth.
  • Safely operate 12 passenger vans while transporting staff and participants.
  • Research, develop, and implement appropriate recreation and leisure programs and clubs.
  • Prepare recreational facilities for participant use and report any safety deficiencies.
  • Represent and convey information regarding the Old Firehouse’s programs and services at community and school events.
  • Support center operations through purchasing of supplies, maintaining inventory, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 21 years old
  • 1 year of experience in a recreation setting coordinating and implementing recreational programs.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license with no more than 5 demerit points.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
     

Special Requirements: 
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a child protective services background check and a check of the applicants driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently or previously enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least 1 year worth of course work in recreation, leisure, fitness, education or a related field.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of recreation program development, facilitation, and teambuilding.

Under the supervision of the Community Events Director, the Lead Offsite Event Coordinator oversees the on-site execution of RCC’s Summer Concert Series at various outdoor venues in Reston. This position combines hands-on event setup and support with supervisory responsibilities for event attendants and coordination with performers, sound technicians, and RCC staff. The coordinator ensures that each event operates smoothly, safely, and with a high level of public engagement.

Program and Administrative Responsibilities

Event Supervision & Coordination

  • Supervise Offsite Event Attendants, delegate setup and breakdown tasks, and ensure timely completion
  • Be available to the technician and attendants for incident reports, inclement weather consultations, and other unforeseen events
  • Replenish missing items or documents from the event kit based on notes in the Event Report
  • Monitor on-site operations, resolve issues, and escalate concerns to the Community Events Director as needed
  • Ensure compliance with RCC safety procedures and maintain a welcoming environment for patrons and staff

Pre-Event Setup

  • Oversee venue preparation, including equipment and signage placement
  • Confirm arrival and readiness of performers and sound crew
  • Ensure venue cleanliness and patron accessibility

During the Event

  • Serve as RCC’s lead on-site representative, maintaining a high level of professionalism
  • Supervise the monitoring of sound levels, manage technical concerns, and communicate with tech teams
  • Direct staff in distributing materials, gathering feedback, and capturing event documentation (photos/surveys)
  • Respond to patron inquiries and provide event-related information

Post-Event Wrap-Up

  • Supervise event breakdown and secure equipment and supplies
  • Ensure accurate collection and reporting of attendance figures and feedback
  • Submit post-event summaries highlighting outcomes, challenges, and supply or staffing needs

Minimum Employment Standards
Any combination of education and/or experience equivalent to a high school diploma and two years of study at an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising part-time staff or volunteers in a live event or recreation setting
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Ability to work independently while managing a small on-site team
  • Customer service and technical troubleshooting experience a plus

Licenses and Certifications Required

  • Valid driver’s license
  • CPR & First Aid certification (training opportunity provided by RCC)

Special Requirements

  • Availability to work Wednesday–Sunday evenings from 3:00 PM–9:30 PM

Under the supervision of the Community Events Director Reston Community Center is hiring Offsite Event Assistants to support its Summer Concert Series across multiple outdoor venues in Reston, VA. This role combines event coordination, customer service and light technical support to ensure smooth and enjoyable concerts for the community. Team members assist with setup and breakdown, engage with patrons, and act as on-site representatives of RCC. 

Program and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Pre-Event Setup:

Under supervision and within the guidelines of a VASAP-approved curriculum, the group leaders prepare and instruct a 10-hour or 8-hour alcohol and/or drug and driver education program appropriate to the classification level for the class. They are responsible for implementing several Fairfax County ASAP policies and procedures. Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice, counseling, or related field, plus one year of graduate study and two years of experience in leading psych educational programs. Knowledge of classroom techniques and knowledge of substance abuse and its personal and societal effects is a must. Location: Reston Community Center, Reston, VA

Under the supervision of the RCC Lifelong Learning Program Director, a Language Learning (aka Foreign Language) Instructor teaches classes (e.g. French, Spanish, Chinese, etc.) to include a course outline and individual session lesson plans in accordance with RCC policies. The instructor is responsible for supply inventory and must notify the supervising Program Director regarding class supply needs as well as all equipment and audio-visual needs. This position exercises a high level of independent judgment in planning and organizing classroom activities. Language Learning Instructors will teach on-site at RCC/Hunters Woods.  Instructors are expected to provide a class description and syllabus to the appropriate Program Director and will assist with contacting registered students regarding any necessary supplies and materials.  

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach according to approved course outline and advertised content;
  • Recommend supply lists within existing budgets or requests one-time patron-paid supply fee;
  • Familiarity with the RCC evacuation and emergency procedures;
  • Maintain control of classroom with disciplinary action in accordance with RCC guidelines;
  • Arrive 10 minutes prior to the beginning of each class to ascertain that the classroom space is correctly set up and is safe for the participants;
  • Begin and end classes on time;
  • Supervise students attending classes at all times, after class has begun;  
  • Report patron medical emergencies that occur during class, property damage or other acts of vandalism using RCC Incident Report forms within 24 hours;
  • Responsible for the proper use, care, and security of RCC equipment and facilities;
  • Interact with participants and interested members of the public in a positive manner.
  • Promote Center programming through referral of patrons to other RCC staff when questions extend beyond the instructor’s area of expertise;
  • Administer and collect RCC class evaluation forms at the end of each class workshop;
  • Provide all program suggestions, schedule additions, and roster changes in writing to the immediate supervisor;
  • Refer requests for refunds, transfers, suggestions, and complaints to immediate supervisor;
  • Notify immediate supervisor a minimum of four hours in advance of class if unable to instruct class due to illness or other emergency situations;
  • Responsible for notifying students of class cancellation if it is due to a non-emergency situation;
  • Verify attendance and telephone numbers in the first class.  Class participants not listed may not be allowed into class and must be reported to immediate supervisor;
  • Provide written descriptions of course content to RCC Program Director as needed for preparation of publicity materials;
  • Complete time sheets after each class session for payroll purposes (applicable to County Exempt Employees, not Independent Contractors).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school plus at least two years working in a related field;
  • Certification in a specialized field;
  • Exercises a high level of independent judgment and teaching and good communication skills in individual or group settings;  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of four years study or training at an accredited college or university or equivalent certification in a specialty area;
  • At least two years of work experience teaching related program in a classroom setting;
  • CPR/First Aid Certified;
