  • Therapeutic Recreation Leader: Provides participant supervision. Facilitates daily activities and assists with program planning.
  • Therapeutic Recreation Unit Leader: Oversees designated participants and staff within a program space. Plans and facilitates daily therapeutic activities.
  • Therapeutic Recreation Director: In charge of day-to-day operations at a TR program location. Oversees all participants and staff. Assists with participant behavioral support.


Salary Range:

  •  “Therapeutic Recreation Leader” - Rec Leader IIs (S7) and IIIs (S9) – Starting at $15.90 (FY 2023 living wage)
  • “Therapeutic Recreation Unit Leader” - TR Leader I (S13) – Starting at $18.0685        
  • “Therapeutic Recreation Director” - TR Leader II (S15) – Starting at $19.8336

Minimum Qualifications:
Must be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate. Must have at least 250 hours of experience in recreation or school setting serving individuals with disabilities (college course work can supplement experience).

Preferred Qualifications:
CPR/First Aid certification.

Special Requirements:
Must be able to successfully complete a criminal history record check. New Hires must have proof of a negative TB test result within the last year/Returning Staff need proof of a negative results within the past 2 years. Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to start date.

Five Positions Available

Schedule: This position is scheduled to work up to 20 hours per week not to exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Hours will be worked in the evenings and on weekends.  There is no guarantee of a minimum number of scheduled hours (daily, weekly, monthly or yearly.)

Description: Monitors community athletic groups’ use of Fairfax County Public School and Fairfax County Park Authority athletic fields and gyms.  Schedules periodic visits to an assigned number of facilities to ensure county regulations are being followed. Conducts safety inspections, coordinates with school and park staff, works with school security and police, checks permits, validates the number of members in user groups, collects reports from user groups, and is responsible for on-call emergencies within an assigned area. Reports to Program Manager on a weekly basis and is responsible for daily data entry. Work schedule is weekday evenings and weekends.  Attendance at occasional training sessions is required.

Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school degree. Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.  Must be at least 21 years of age.

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual in Spanish and English.  Excellent communication skills and problem-solving abilities. Organized, responsible, and able to self-direct. Beginner-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Basic knowledge of creating a worksheet; performing calculations in a worksheet; modifying and formatting a worksheet; printing workbook contents).

Special Requirements: An appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Schedule: Staff are employed to work 2-3 times a month on Saturdays or Sundays; program hours will vary. Some daytime, and evening work is available in a substitute capacity.

This announcement will be used to fill the Therapeutic Recreation Social Club positions at various locations throughout the county. The primary goal of the work is to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in positive leisure activities and improve social skills through the provision of a variety of recreation activities and leisure education sessions in the community. These positions work as members of the Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) team to accomplish specific outcomes for individuals with disabilities.

Social Club Facilitator ($14.46 per hour): The Social Club Facilitator is responsible for assisting in the planning and facilitation of activities and special events in the community according to the needs and interests of the participants and the standards of TRS. Typical duties include: helping to facilitate a positive and safe leisure experience for members in the community; meeting at designated pickup locations; assisting with the set-up and clean-up of programs; supervising and assisting with the implementing modifications and adaptations for participants. Some personal care, such as feeding or changing, may be required. Please note: the salary will not exceed the midpoint of the advertised salary range. This requisition will be used to fill multiple positions.

Social Club Coordinator ($19.06 per hour): The Social Club Coordinator is responsible researching and coordinating two to three social and community outings a month for individuals with varying disabilities. Typical duties include: ensuring staff are prepared for trips; leading planning meetings; developing and implementing detailed activity plans and flyers; promoting participants independent leisure skills; picking up of backpack, keys, and supplies; maintaining current information on all program participants; taking attendance, submitting figures to the Adult Social Club Program Supervisor, and completing duties checklist; completing required paperwork; providing direction and leadership to staff and volunteers; ensuring appropriate supervision of participants; monitoring activity implementation and evaluating activity based on standards and program objectives; and providing feedback to staff concerning activities observed.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age and have prior experience in a recreation or school setting for individuals with disabilities. Related course work may partially supplement experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual. CPR and First Aid certification. Experience facilitating recreational and educational programs with individuals with disabilities in facilities or community settings. 

Special Requirements: Must be able to successfully complete a criminal history record check. Negative TB result.

Qualifications: Must have two or more years of Lifeguarding experience.  Employment is contingent upon current certification of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training for the Professional Rescuer, CPR, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration. American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification preferred. National Parks and Recreation Association Aquatic Facility Operator License or comparable preferred.

Job Objectives: Under direct guidance of the Old Firehouse Manager this position is responsible for direct supervision of teens and “tweens” in a recreation setting, off-site field trips and summer programs. Facilitators research, create and implement appropriate recreation and leisure program experiences for the teens of the community while ensuring a safe and fun environment and continually encouraging personal growth within participants.

Essential Functions:

  • Act as an integral part of a team providing exceptional customer service to all who enter the Old Firehouse.
  • Provide direct supervision to participants to ensure safety, while promoting fun and encouraging positive interaction and relationship development.
  • Facilitators act as role models for impressionable youth.
  • Safely operate 12 passenger vans while transporting staff and participants.
  • Research, develop, and implement appropriate recreation and leisure programs and clubs.
  • Prepare recreational facilities for participant use and report any safety deficiencies.
  • Represent and convey information regarding the Old Firehouse’s programs and services at community and school events
  • Support center operations through purchasing of supplies, maintaining inventory, and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 21 years old
  • 1 year of experience in a recreation setting coordinating and implementing recreational programs.
  • Possession of a valid state driver’s license with no more than 5 demerit points.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment.
  • Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a child protective services background check and a check of the applicants driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Currently or previously enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least 1 year worth of course work in recreation, leisure, fitness, education or a related field.
  • Principles, practices and methods of recreation program development, facilitation, and teambuilding.
  • Principles, methods and techniques of supervising teenage participants in recreational activities.
  • Recreational activity hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Rules, practices, techniques and equipment used in a wide range of recreational and leisure activities.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

  • Office and indoor/outdoor recreational facility environment; travel from site to site; exposure to computer screens, potentially hazardous chemicals, inclement weather conditions; may work in or with water; may work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Schedule may include morning, evening and weekend hours.
  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles.
