- No food or drink, other than water, is allowed on school property.
- Carry your Gym Use Permit at all times (electronic copies are acceptable) and abide by your permitted time schedule.
- Spectators and players are permitted in the gym only.
- AT NO TIME shall the following items be permitted on Fairfax County Public School property:
a. Alcohol
b. Tobacco Products
c. Illegal Drugs
d. Weapons
- Respect school property. Please do not remove chairs and/or tables from other areas. The facility must be left in the same condition in which it was found. All facility damage must be reported to Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services by the Volunteer Building Director or league administrator.
- Respect the authority of the custodians, school staff, Volunteer Building Directors and NCS staff
Rules for Outdoor Sports Using Gyms
The following guidelines are for athletic activities normally played outdoors but that are allowed indoors during inclement weather or for off-season training. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has approved the equipment listed below for indoor use. Specific approval for use must be obtained from FCPS for any sports, activities or equipment not listed below.
- Outdoor sports groups may use FCPS gyms to conduct conditioning programs only. the following activities are prohibited for all sports:
- Kicking, throwing, striking or otherwise using sports balls, pucks, equipment, etc., in such a manner as to damage light fixtures, scoreboards, backboards, ceiling tiles, floors, windows, walls and other property;
- Scrimmages, games or league play; and
- Kicking throwing or propelling on goals (any structure or area set off by traffic cones, or other temporary effort to define a goal opening).
Baseball / Softball / Cricket
- Pitching and catching: Regulation baseball and softballs are permitted as long as proper padding/gymnastic crash pads are used. No other use of regulation balls is allowed.
- Infield Practice: Ball use is limited to Incrediballs™ and other soft balls designed for indoor use. Bat use is permitted only with adult supervision.
- Batting Cage - Batting practice is only allowed inside a completely enclosed batting cage.
- Cricket Batting - balls may only be hit from artificial turf or carpet mats unless modified bats (ex. plastic) and balls (ex. tennis balls) are used.
Field Hockey
- Field Hockey is prohibited in Elementary School gyms.
- Use is limited to regulation indoor field hockey balls.
- Field hockey sticks may be used only if covered with protective padding (e.g. socks, stick covers).
Football
- Football is prohibited in Elementary School gyms.
- Kicking the football is permitted only into a kicking net.
- Passing and non-contact practice is limited to the area within the lined perimeter of the basketball court.
Futsol is prohibited in all Fairfax County Public Schools.
Indoor Hockey is prohibited in all Fairfax County Public Schools.
Golf
- Golf is prohibited in Elementary School gyms.
- Restricted to use of golf-ball-size Wiffle™-type limited flight balls.
- Balls may only be hit from artificial turf or carpet mats.
Inline Hockey is prohibited in all Fairfax County Public Schools.
Lacrosse
- Lacrosse is prohibited in Elementary School gyms.
- Passing and non-contact practice is limited to the area within the lined perimeter of the basketball court.
- Restricted to use of tennis balls and/or indoor practice balls.
Running
- No running in hallways or stairways.
- No indoor bleacher running in High/Secondary/Middle Schools.
- Please note: outdoor bleacher running is permitted in aisle ways only.
Shot Put
- Shot Put is prohibited in Middle and Elementary School gyms.
- Restricted Use of indoor shot put only.
- Throws must be made from one protected surface to another (e.g. mats, sheets of plywood)
- Prohibited in the vicinity of basketball goals or bleachers
Soccer
- Restricted to use of an indoor or soft (felt-covered, foam, etc.) soccer ball.
- Passing and non-contact practice is limited to the area within the lined perimeter of the basketball court.
Tennis
- Tennis is prohibited in Elementary School gyms.
- Hitting of balls is restricted to walls without windows.
