The new Lorton Community Center opened its doors Oct. 10, 2022, becoming Fairfax County’s 12th community center. The center serves as the new home for the Lorton Senior Center, which formerly operated in leased space, as well as provides a broad array of services, programs and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities. Offerings include afterschool programs, facility rentals, fitness classes, gym sports, meeting spaces, School Age Child Care (SACC), therapeutic recreation services, camps for youth, and computer and technology instruction.
The community center also provides space for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC), which provides basic needs assistance, including a weekly food pantry, emergency rent and utilities to prevent homelessness, education opportunities, afterschool programs and more.
The Lorton Community Center is co-located with the Lorton Library and Lorton Park at 9520 Richmond Highway in Lorton. The project included a complete renovation of the existing 10,000-square-foot library with a new addition of 6,000 square feet and construction of a new 30,000-square-foot Community Center building. The rejuvenated campus includes a new playground, fitness area, open field area, plaza and trail loop in the adjacent park.
Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, the Fairfax County Public Library, the Fairfax County Park Authority and local community leaders will celebrate the opening of the new Lorton Community Center, Lorton Library and Lorton Park during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be followed by tours, community activities and light refreshments.
