AAPI Heritage Month is a national commemorative celebration of the contributions histories of Americans of Asian and Pacific descent. According to the U.S. Census, 20 percent of Fairfax County residents are of AAPI descent. The month of May was selected to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States (May 7, 1843) and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was built mainly by Chinese immigrants and was completed in May of 1869.
