NCS Technology Programs Develop Next Generation of STEAM Leaders

STEAMtastic Showcase
Teens from across Fairfax County are getting a taste of leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) fields through participating at Fairfax County Tech Centers. Programs offer a variety of project-based activities to strengthen learning abilities, develop new skills, foster creative and critical thinking and provide hands-on experiences with new and emerging technologies.

Teen participants recently held their first annual “STEAM-tastic Showcase” event at the James Lee Community Center. With more than 200 guests, families and partners in attendance, teens showcased their work and conducted workshops on topics including robotics, 3D printing, programming, art, design and engineering.

“I was very excited to see the teen leaders take control and lead this event,” said Jyll Turner, Technology Programs Manager with Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services. “Their growth is evident in how they engage guests in conversations about their projects. Their confidence is growing with each project.”

Fairfax County Technology Programs are operated by the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services at 14 locations around the county. These programs provide a fun and instructive environment where teens work with their peers, mentors and industry professionals to enhance their current STEAM talents, develop new skills and learn new problem-solving approaches.
