Stuff the Bus

For nearly 15 years, Fairfax County’s Stuff the Bus program has been a critical resource for local food pantries and families struggling with food insecurity. In partnership with local grocery stores, volunteers, and community organizations, the program collects non-perishable food items and financial donations at various locations throughout the county. This collaboration helps keep the shelves of local pantries and food providers stocked throughout the year.

This dashboard presents data from 2015 to the present, capturing a detailed view of the program’s impact. In certain years – especially following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic – the program significantly expanded, with multiple events held to meet the community need.

Key metrics, including the Value of Food and Meals Collected, are from metrics and guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), while the Average Cost of a Meal in Fairfax County is from Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap.

Through this data, the dashboard celebrates Fairfax County’s collective efforts in fighting hunger and highlights the ongoing need for community-driven action to ensure food security for all.

As highlighted by the Capital Area Food Bank’s Hunger Report 2024, many food-insecure individuals and families do not access charitable food programs for a number of reasons. Additionally, tools like Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap provide county-level insights into hunger rates and food costs. Initiatives like Stuff the Bus are vital to increasing awareness of local resources and addressing the needs of the local community.
