Countywide Policy Plan Amendment
On December 7, 2009, the Board of Supervisors endorsed the creation of an annual process to update the County Inventory of Historic Sites information in the Heritage Resources sections of the Comprehensive Plan. On July 9, 2013, through the approval of the 2013 Comprehensive Plan Work Program, the Board of Supervisors authorized an annual consideration, if needed, of a Comprehensive Plan amendment to update Heritage Resources information in the Comprehensive Plan. Through successive work programs, the authorization has been carried over and was readopted in 2025.
Project Scope
The purpose of the 2026 Plan Amendment is to update Heritage Resources information in the Comprehensive Plan; and primarily incorporate current information relating to the Inventory of Historic Sites to reflect History Commission actions. Heritage Resources information in the Comprehensive Plan was last updated in 2018.
Department of Planning and Development (DPD) staff coordinated with staff in the Fairfax County Park Authority’s Archaeology and Collections Branch to identify sites listed on the Inventory that have been demolished and no longer retain archaeological integrity. These resources were marked for delisting from the Inventory.
DPD staff presented the proposed updates to the Fairfax County History Commission’s Inventory of Historic Sites Committee in October 2025. The Inventory Committee approved the proposed updates, which were subsequently presented to the full History Commission in November 2025. The History Commission approved the updates on December 3, 2025.
