Turkeycock Creek at Bren Mar Park

Project Number #SD-00031-263

This project proposes the restoration and stabilization of a portion of Turkeycock Run which travels through Bren Mar Park in Alexandria, Virginia.

Project Update: December 13, 2024

A public meeting was held on Thursday, December 12, 2024, to provide updates to the community on design progress and garner community feedback. Additional public meetings will be held after future design submissions (dates to be determined). The design is expected to be completed in late Summer/early Fall of 2025.

Project Background

Excessive widening of the channel has resulted in significant erosion of the stream banks, leading to loss of trees. The eroding banks also threaten the integrity of an existing sanitary sewer system that runs parallel to, and crosses, the stream. Additionally, this section of stream experiences a lack of diversity in aquatic life. Biodiversity of any ecosystem provides an indication of the overall health of the system in general.

Project Description

This project will begin immediately downstream of the culvert below I-395 and will terminate upstream of the Bren Mar Rec Association pool property. It will consist of various restoration and stabilization practices meant to mimic natural processes and evolution of a stream channel, with the goals of protecting existing trails and infrastructure, such as sanitary sewer and waterlines, from damage due to continuing erosion of the stream banks and bed. This project also aims to enhance the transport of sediment through the system as a means of improving water quality.

Project Location

The project is located within the limits of Bren Mar Park, located at 5415 Colliers Lane, Alexandria, Virginia 22312.

Project Phase

The project entered the design phase in early 2024, which is expected to take approximately 1 year.

Timeline

The design is expected to be completed in late Summer/early Fall of 2025. Following approval of the design, the project will enter a permitting and bid phase and then move into construction. The start date of construction is to be determined.

What To Expect

At times, contractors and staff may be onsite to evaluate the design and validate field conditions and proposed improvements. Staff will be wearing high-visibility clothing.

Project Cost and Funding Sources

Design of the Turkeycock Creek at Bren Mar Park stream restoration project is funded for $805,000. Construction funding is dependent upon future budget availability and allocations. Stormwater projects are funded through the county Stormwater Service District.

Presentations to the Community

As the project advances through the iterative design development process, community meetings will be scheduled to present the project and its design to the residents along the project and to obtain feedback from the community. Meetings will be scheduled for a concept design, 65% design, 95% design, 100% design/pre-construction and post-construction.
