The Fairfax County Office of Elections has openings for part-time positions in the Absentee Satellites (Early Voting), Voting Equipment and Logistics, Absentee Mail, and Training and Operations Divisions. The selected candidates will report directly to the managers of the respective divisions.
Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience in a professional office environment. Experience with basic windows computer operations. Candidates possessing a Bachelor’s degree or coursework towards completion may be considered to waive the experience requirement.
#1Absentee Satellites (Early Voting) Division:
Assists with preparing supplies, organizing training materials, and entering data into online databases. The selected candidate may partner/team with others to deliver or pick up materials from early voting locations. Candidates must be dependable and professional, demonstrate excellent attention to details, and possess strong organizational skills. Experience with computer data entry, Microsoft Office, and email is required.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working for an elections office, precinct, and/or early voting location. Medium to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience entering data (and creating or managing custom end user views) into custom database systems such as Airtable, Salesforce, or SQL; and basic graphic design skills for designing and creating signs and flyers.
#2Voting Equipment and Logistics Division:
Assists with the testing and maintenance of voting equipment; prepares voting equipment and supplies for delivery and inspection and sorting on return; works with transportation partners to transport equipment and supplies to and from voting sites; and other duties as assigned. Work location shall be at the Morrisette Operation Center with some travels to the Government Center as needed.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working for an elections office, precinct, and/or voting equipment.
# 3 Absentee Mail Division (Openings in two subdivisions):
Absentee ballots team member. Assists a team to receive, process, and/or tabulate mailed-in absentee ballots. Close attention to detail, accuracy in performing tasks, and ability to focus for over an hour on performing tasks. Ability to learn new processes and critically important to be ready to move quickly among different duties as needed at a moment’s notice, and input and access information from a computer. Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of election is a must. Weekly working schedule will depend on the number of ballots returned and the general election schedule.
Customer service assistant. Applicants must have excellent customer service skills and be able to independently respond to voter questions clearly, accurately, and professionally both in writing and verbally. They must be willing to learn the procedures, laws, and policies governing absentee voting to ensure accurate information is provided to voters.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working for an elections office, absentee mail, and/or customer service including answering phones and responding to emails. Medium to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience entering and accessing data into custom database systems such as Airtable.
#4 Training and Operations Division:
Assists with preparing election administration operations, including preparing for in-person training and maintaining internal databases, and new officer recruitment and onboarding. Assists in designing training materials and providing virtual training support. The selected candidate may partner with other divisions to provide election officer operations support.
Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience working in a customer service role, or for an elections office or civic organization. Medium to advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Airtable, and Zite. Experience using graphic design websites such as Adobe Pro and Canva, or similar tools.
Physical Requirements:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and requires walking, standing, sitting (for long periods of time), kneeling, reaching, and bending at times. Generally, works in an office environment but may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor, operate keyboard driven equipment and computer, and ability to communicate in person and on the phone.
Requires the ability to assemble files, lift, move, push and pull equipment, documents, and supplies up to 30 lbs. (up to 50lbs for Voting Equipment and Logistics Division). Requires ability to work extensive overtime hours under demanding conditions during elections. All duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodation.
