Many older children in foster care can be coping with any number of complex issues because of their exposure to multiple traumatic events within their family and within the care-giving system. Because of their exposure to complex trauma, we tend to see problems with attachment, affect regulation, cognition, behavioral control, dissociation, and self-concept.

Families4Kids (F4K) provides a safe social network for the development of self-esteem, social skills and trust and a sense of importance, group identity and belonging. Participants interact with volunteers and mentors who serve as role models, friends and links to the community in helping them prepare for and grow into adulthood. As their assigned social worker, you will play an integral role in helping to match your client with a dedicated mentor who will help them in their social, behavioral and educational development.
 

Program Benefits

• Social Workers are directly involved in the mentor matching process.
• Social Workers receive a mentor relationship goal sheet along with monthly reports from mentors regarding their client's progress in achieving those goals.
• Mentors will be a new member of the Social Worker's support team in helping clients achieve success.
   

Youth Eligibility

• Youth ages 12 – 21 referred through their Department of Family Services (DFS) Foster Care Worker, case manager or other professional working with the youth
• Youth must be able to function safely in group community activities.
• Prior to participating, the Program Coordinator will schedule a meeting with Social Worker and youth regarding appropriateness of youth for the program.
• Assigned one-on-one mentors are jointly approved by F4Ks Program Coordinator, mentor, youth, and Social Worker.
