Fairfax County is seeking input on a new name and identity for Original Mount Vernon High School (OMVHS). A community meeting to provide feedback on proposed options will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, 6 - 8 p.m. at the Gerry Hyland Government Center, 8350 Richmond Hwy., Suite 221, Mount Vernon, VA.
The extensive Original Mount Vernon High School Renovation project began in Fall 2023. Teen and Senior programming at NCS' South County Community Center, located at OMVHS, was moved to nearby centers in Fall 2023. Renovations on the 85-year-old building are expected to be complete in the Spring of 2026. OMVHS, located at 8333 Richmond Hwy., Mount Vernon, is listed on the Virginia Historic Landmarks Register and the National Registry of Historic Places.
The goal of the renaming project is to re-envision the site with a new name and identity that better reflects the vibrancy of the community. The new OMVHS facility will be designed to accommodate the programming needs of the community while supporting the vision of One Fairfax and the Fairfax County Strategic Plan. The proposed programs and future uses are organized in three groups:
- Core elements are the Teen and Senior Center, Gym, Early Childhood Education programs and non-profit programs, .
- Anchor elements are educational programs to support workforce development and financial literacy.
- Complementary elements are business incubation spaces as well as visual and performing arts programs that are in synergy with the core and anchor element programs. Additionally, the Welcome Center and the current library, which will be converted to an event space with this project, will be used by the community for gatherings and provide opportunities for community events.
