On July 10, 2025, Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, along with the Fairfax County Park Authority, McLean Community Center and Reston Community Center, accepted a proclamation from the county Board of Supervisors declaring July 2025 Park and Recreation Month in Fairfax County.
The proclamation was presented at an Evenings on the Ellipse concert, a free series sponsored by the Park Authority, on the Fairfax County Government Center’s ellipse. The community took part in the celebration with special family-friendly games and activities.
The proclamation recognized Fairfax County’s 420 parks and nearly 24,000 acres of parkland that enhance the community’s quality of life and well-being. It also recognized the collaboration of county agencies to meet the needs of millions of residents through programs, camps, community spaces, rec centers and more. NCS is proud to offer hundreds of opportunities in those areas for all ages. For more information on NCS' recreation opportunities, visit NCS' Park and Recreation Month page.
Park and Recreation Month is an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). Since 1985, the United States has celebrated Park and Recreation Month in July. For the event's 40th anniversary this year, NRPA Park and Recreation Month theme is “Build Together, Play Together." The annual celebration highlights not only fantastic facilities and programs, but also applauds the more than 160,000 full-time park and recreation professionals nationwide.
