At its meeting on Sept. 9, 2025, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation designating September 2025 as Hunger Action Month in Fairfax County. Rev. Jonathan Wilkins Sr. of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Centreville accepted the proclamation.
Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS)’ mission is to partner with communities, families and individuals to provide opportunities to access a continuum of resources that promote equity and create positive outcomes for people of all ages and abilities. Alleviating hunger in Fairfax County is part of that mission, and NCS is proud to work with county agencies, as well as area non-profits, on this issue.
The proclamation states that 27% of people struggle with food insecurity in Fairfax County and more than 65,000 children rely on free and reduced-price meals in Fairfax County Public Schools. As costs for food, housing, and other goods and services continue to rise in Northern Virginia, Fairfax County continues to provide access to essential programs to ensure all individuals and families can thrive.
County services available include Coordinated Services Planning, assistance from the Department of Family Service to navigate the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, and free and reduced-cost meals at Fairfax County Public Schools, among others.
NCS’ Stuff the Bus food drive will hold a one-day Hunger Action Month event on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at locations countywide. Please visit the Stuff the Bus page to see bus locations and a list of most-requested non-perishable items.
Since launching in 2011, Stuff the Bus has collected more than 240 tons of food to feed people experiencing food insecurity in Fairfax County. Statistics show the need for food is great, and demand is increasing. In Fairfax County 27% of people are food insecure, meaning that they have limited or uncertain availability to the food needed to live their fullest lives.
