The Fairfax Circuit Court Historic Records Center holds Chancery cases from 1803 up through 1979.
Chancery cases are very useful for genealogical and land research purposes due to heavy reliance on depositions and other court documents used as evidence such as wills, deeds, and plats.
Please note that the Fairfax Circuit Court Chancery cases prior to 1865 are not complete, mostly due to losses sustained during the Civil War. Sadly, nearly all of our 18th century chancery cases were stolen or destroyed during the 19th century.
The Library of Virginia has digitized Fairfax County’s chancery cases through 1913. You can view the Library of Virginia’s finding aid for the Fairfax County Chancery cases here.
You can search and view the cases online through their database and download the complete case files.
You may also view the original files in person at the Historic Records Center.
For Chancery cases after 1942, please call the Historic Records Center at 703-246-4168.
