Chancery

The Fairfax Circuit Court Historic Records Center holds Chancery Court cases from 1803 to approximately 1937. Due to losses sustained during the Civil War, Fairfax County’s chancery cases are not complete.

Chancery cases are very useful for genealogical and land research purposes as they can include depositions, wills, deeds, and plats.

What is a Chancery case?

The Library of Virginia has digitized Fairfax County’s Chancery Cases through 1913. You can view the Library of Virginia’s finding aid for the Fairfax County Chancery cases here.

The Library of Virginia also maintains an online searchable database, with case file images, of Fairfax and other Virginia county chancery cases.

Fairfax County’s chancery cases may also be viewed in person at the Historic Records Center. To schedule a visit, please call 703-246-4168.

For Chancery Cases after 1937, please call the Off-Site Records Facility at 703-246-6656.
