Fairfax County School Census, 1890

The 1890 Census of School Population lists all school-aged children, along with their parents or guardians. The census books are divided into magisterial districts, and are also segregated, divided into “White” and “Colored” sections. Although the census collection is not complete, the HRC holds lists for Providence, Falls Church, Lee, and Mount Vernon districts. There is also a 1900 School Census for Falls Church.

Information contained in the census books includes names, both child and parent’s/guardian’s; age; gender; race; ability to read; ability to write; attendance at a public school, private school, or no school; and notes regarding disability or multiples (twins or triplets).
