Job Description:

  • Responsible for supervision and welfare of assigned groups of school age children (3-10 years old)
  • Must follow VA State Licensing standards set forth by the State of Virginia Department of Social Services with respect to Child Day Care Centers in addition to the guidelines of the McLean Community Center.
  • Responsible for implementing, supervising, and facilitating campers’ involvement in recreation activities as directed by Camp and Assistant Camp Director.
  • Responsible for preparing equipment and supplies for each activity.
  • Responsible for cleanup of activities completed throughout the day.
  • Assists with completion of end of camp supply inventories.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Description:
Assists the Camp Director with all the following duties, as well as fulfills duties independently in absence of Camp Director:

  • Planning, implementing, and evaluating daily camp activities and schedules that are age appropriate (camper age groups are 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, and 9-10 years old).
  • Supervision of camp counselors
  • Responsible for day-to-day leadership during the camp program, general supervision, and for establishing proper lines of communication with parents.
  • Daily inspection of equipment and facilities for hazardous conditions.  This includes all outdoor play equipment, general program equipment, and facilities for hazardous conditions. If there are visible hazards, the assistant director should immediately notify the Camp Director as well as the rest of the Camp Staff.
  • Responsible for completing all paperwork in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for requesting all program supplies and equipment, in addition to the care and cleanup of these supplies and equipment daily.
  • Maintaining an open line of communication with the Camp Director concerning the program, staff, participants, etc.

Under direct guidance of Old Firehouse Management this position is responsible for direct supervision of teens and “tweens” in a recreation setting and off-site field trips during the summer program.  Counselors ensure a safe and fun environment in and out of the building while encouraging personal growth within participants. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Act as an integral part of a team providing exceptional customer service to all who enter the Old Firehouse.
  • Provide direct supervision to participants to ensure safety, while promoting fun and encouraging positive interaction and relationship development.  
  • Counselors act as young adult role models for impressionable youth.
  • Prepare recreational facilities for participant use and report any safety deficiencies to Old Firehouse Management.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • 21 years old
  • 1 year of experience in a recreation setting coordinating and implementing recreational programs. 
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid state driver’s license with no more than 5 demerit points. 
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of employment. 

Special Requirements: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a check of the Child Protective Services Registry to the satisfaction of the employer.  

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Currently or previously enrolled in an accredited college or university with at least 1 year worth of course work in recreation, leisure, fitness, education or a related field.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices and methods of recreation program development, facilitation, and teambuilding. 
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and techniques of supervising teenage participants in recreational activities. 
  • Knowledge of recreational activity hazards and standard safety practices. 
  • Knowledge of rules, practices, techniques and equipment used in a wide range of recreational and leisure activities. 
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 

Working Conditions:

  • Office and indoor/outdoor recreational facility environment; travel from site to site; exposure to computer screens, potentially hazardous chemicals, inclement weather conditions; may work in or with water; may work on slippery or uneven surfaces. Schedule may include evening and weekend hours. 
  • Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting and carrying; operating motorized vehicles.

Desired Qualifications

  • Must be at least 16 years old to work as a counselor.
  • High school diploma and/or related experience working with children needed. Prefer at least one year of college. Will train applicants with limited experience who can provide quality references as to the applicants work ethic, positive attitude, an aptitude for learning and ability to work with children, peers and older adults with diverse social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience and knowledge to plan, develop, administer, and supervise youth activities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Must be cooperative, dedicated, reliable, patient, and mature.
  • Must be First-Aid and CPR certified by the beginning of camp. Certification is included in the Camp Counselor training the week prior to the beginning of camps.
