Salary: $19.82 per hour (May increase based on experience.)
Status: Part-time, Temporary (Summer – mid- June through mid- Aug.) – No benefits.
Location: Various locations throughout Fairfax County.
Description: Looking for a fun and meaningful summer job? NCS is seeking Therapeutic Recreation Unit Leaders to lead staff and support individuals with varying intellectual and physical disabilities. Provide participant supervision and support. This active position offers hands-on experience, leadership development, and the opportunity to make a positive impact while having fun.
- Activities include arts and crafts, sports, games, music, and more
- Ideal for students or young adults interested in recreation, education, youth development, or special education
- Day camps only - Monday - Friday; no overnight stays
Responsibilities:
- Supervise staff and daily operations of the program
- Plan and facilitate activities for school aged campers with varying intellectual, physical, sensory, and/or emotional disabilities
- Assist with program planning and camp room management
- Provide participant supervision and support, to include assistance with personal care for campers
- Supervise campers during programs
- Support inclusive camp environments for participants of all abilities
- Work as part of a team to ensure a safe and enjoyable camp experience
- Monitor and observe the activities of program participants
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age and a high school graduate
- Must have completed at least 250 hours of experience in recreation or a school setting serving individuals with disabilities. (College course work can supplement experience.)
- Must have CPR/First Aid certification (Certification training can be provided by NCS upon request.)
- Must pass a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check
Physical Requirements:
- Position is active in nature
- Regularly move around to supervise and interact with participants at their level
- Occasionally lift, transport, position, push/pulls or move up to 50 pounds
- Possess sufficient mobility and a range of motion to perform repetitive standing, walking, balancing, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, sitting on the floor, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and twisting
- Ability to react quickly to the physical actions of a program participant
- Requires the ability to apply CPR and First Aid skills as needed and respond to emergency situations
- Administrative and supervisory activities will require the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
