I-95 Landfill Complex Staff Helps Grassland Birds

In a study conducted by intern Blair Evancho, county staff conducted bird point count surveys in a 50-acre section of closed landfill where mowing has been significantly reduced.

From five avian point count surveys conducted between August 22 and October 17, 2024. In the 'no mow' area, 29 species were noted, including three of regional or continental concern: Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, and Grasshopper Sparrow. The most recorded birds were Grasshopper Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, American Kestrel, and Eastern Meadowlark, all of which are experiencing population declines.

Based on the study recommendations, county staff will now limit landfill mowing during the nesting season and raise the mower blades to a height of 8 inches. Through a partnership with a local non-profit and university, the DPWES plans to continue monitoring grassland birds at the site.
