Curbside Collection Schedule Changes Details ->

Please be advised that no changes have been made to our weekly trash (grey cart) and recycling (blue cart) collection schedule. To ensure that all trash and recycling is collected, please make sure that all materials are at the curb/street line by 6 a.m. on your regular collection day.

Trash and recycled material must be placed inside the cart. Trash or recycling placed outside the county-provided cart will not be collected.

No privately-owned carts will be serviced.

As of Monday, March 30, 2020 until further notice, special pickups and yard waste collection have been suspended.

Our customer service phone lines are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Due to the high volume of calls, you may experience extended wait times.

If you have collection service through a private company, please contact them directly for service information.

This information applies to COUNTY collection customers who receive trash and recycling collection from Fairfax County Government, about ten percent (10%) of residents and businesses in Fairfax County. If you receive services from a PRIVATE collector, contact them directly for information.

Your special pickup will be scheduled for your next regular trash collection day. Set your items out by 6 a.m. at the curb/street line – but not more than one day before your collection day. For submissions made after 2:30 p.m. the day before your regular collection day, your special pickup request will be scheduled for the following week. If, for any reason, your trash pickup is delayed, your special pick up will also be delayed and collected the same day that your trash is collected. Materials

Different trucks collect different types of materials.  Each type of material must be placed out separately for collection, separated by material type.

  • 12 cubic yards of material (a pile about 5 feet x 6 feet x 10 feet)
  • Piles of heavy/dense materials are limited to 6 cubic yards.
  • Materials must be no bigger than 6 feet long and 6 inches in diameter.
  • We need 20 feet of clearance on all sides of debris pile as well as above the debris pile so that we can safely collect.  Do not put debris under power wires or tree branches.

Special collection piles are limited to:

  • Brush/Limbs – brush means shrubs, tree limbs, under 6 inches in diameter/6 feet in length.  NO LUMBER!
  • Bulk Material – bulk means household items too big for the regular trash truck; no longer than 6 feet in length.
  • Metal Appliances and other metal items such as stove, washer, dryer, exercise bike, etc.
  • Freon – appliances containing refrigerant/coolant (refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier, air conditioner)
  • E-Waste – includes computers and computer monitors and Televisions – most devises will be disassembled and the parts recycled.  Some newer devices may be repurposed for reuse by others.  While the contractor does perform data destruction as part of processing materials, Fairfax county is not responsible for the security of data stored on electronic devices placed at the curb for pickup.  Please do not include broken electronics as part of an E-waste pickup, they should be put out with your regular trash.
Effective Monday, March 30, 2020, the Solid Waste Management Program is changing collection requirements for trash and recycling haulers and changing service levels at the county’s two disposal sites. These changes will remain in effect until the public health emergency passes. All Special Pick-up collection has been suspended. Additional information can be found at Solid Waste Operational Changes to Protect Front-line Workers.
