In most cases, ninety percent (90%) of residents and businesses in Fairfax County, a private collection company picks up your trash and recycling. If you get service through a private company, please contact them directly about services and scheduling. Chapter 109.1 of the Code of the County of Fairfax, VA requires that refuse collectors hold the appropriate permit to provide service to Fairfax County residents and businesses. This authorization is called a “Certificate to Operate.” Contracting with a company that does not have a Certificate to Operate is a violation of county code, and subject to civil penalties of up to $500 per offense. The companies listed on this page hold the appropriate certifications and/or permit required to legally provide refuse collection services in Fairfax County. Chapter 109.1 of the County Code states that no person shall engage in the business of collecting recyclable materials in Fairfax County as a commercial enterprise without first registering their organization with the county. This provision does not prohibit any individual from collecting, processing, or transporting recyclable materials generated within their own household or commercial establishment. Companies with active CTOs need not register under this requirement.
