Project Background

In November 2016, Fairfax County voters approved the Human Services and Community Development Bond Referendum  which provided funding for the construction of two new community centers - including the new Lorton Community Center. In Fall 2019, funding for the complete renovation and expansion of the existing Lorton Library was approved. The completed campus will provide a broad array of services, programs and activities for individuals of all ages and abilities throughout these communities.

Project Scope and Site

The new Lorton Community Center will be co-located with the existing Lorton Library at 9520 Richmond Highway.  The project includes a complete renovation of the existing 10,000 square foot library with a new addition of 6,000 square feet and construction of a new 30,000 square foot single story Community Center building.  The facility will include space for the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC) as the Murphy House and trailer currently used by LCAC will be removed from the site. When complete, the facility will also serve as the new home for the Lorton Senior Center, which is currently operating in leased space.  The project also includes upgrades to the existing park, playground and fitness equipment and walking trails. The construction began in July 2020 with completion anticipated in early fall 2022.

Public Participation in the Design/Construction Process

Fairfax County Community Centers are multi-service facilities that serve the needs of individuals of all ages and abilities throughout Fairfax County. To that end, county staff is seeking public input to ensure that the new facility is designed to meet the needs and interests of the surrounding community. There will be multiple opportunities for community involvement throughout the process to discuss everything from construction logistics, amenities and curb appeal to the programming and activities desired at the location.

Community Steering Committee:

Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Stork convened a Community Steering Committee comprised of 10 community members for the purpose of communicating with interested community members and to advocate with county staff, architects and key stakeholders during the development of the community center. The composition of the committee is representative of the diverse community interests in this project including Lorton neighbors, seniors, youth, athletics, the library and the Lorton Community Action Center.
