Therapeutic Recreation Services (TR) provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to develop the skills that enable them to participate in the recreation and leisure programs of their choice.

TR works in conjunction/tandem with regional services to ensure that we are creating a culture of inclusion within our centers. We work alongside of NCS Culture, Recreation, and Community Connections staff and the inclusion specialist to provide services and programs for individuals of all abilities, allowing and promoting access to the sensory space at Sully to all participants.

Therapeutic Recreation Services

We provide a person-centered, safe, and nurturing environment designed to enhance the quality of life for individuals of all ages – and particularly those with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities – through structured interaction and engagement with the room’s unique features. Sensory rooms, by nature, are relaxing and calming environments that offer a variety of sights, sounds and interactive elements that promote stress-free engagement and physical and intellectual development – especially for young children and individuals with disabilities.

All programs are led and/or supervised by full-time Inclusion Coordinators, who is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, as well as part-time staff trained in how to utilize the room. All programs and sessions are scheduled through the Inclusion Coordinator. To make an appointment and to inquire more about this space, please contact the Sully Scott Community Center at 703-322-4475, TTY 711.
