The Furnace Road entrance to the I-95 Landfill Complex Permanent Closure on Saturday, October 10, 2026
Due to ongoing safety concerns, the Furnace Road entrance to the I-95 Landfill Complex will be permanently closed on Saturday, October 10. All traffic must use the main Mordor Drive entrance.
Staff have observed many drivers making illegal U‑turns into the facility. These unsafe actions have caused several near‑miss accidents and create a higher risk of a serious crash involving drivers, County staff, contractors, or the public. The gate closure will remove the opportunity for vehicles to make the unsafe turn.
Directions to the Mordor Drive entrance:
If you turn onto Furnace Road from Lorton Road, the Mordor Drive entrance will be on your right just before Furnace Road goes under I-95.
If you turn onto Furnace Road from Richmond Highway, the Mordor Drive entrance will be on your left right after you drive under I-95.
Please build at least ten minutes into your drive to account for the longer route.

If you are experiencing problems with timely and reliable recycling and trash waste collection, please check with your collector’s website for notices on any changes in collection frequency or scheduled days of collection. Also look for information on how to receive service when collections are missed. If you have additional questions or concerns, let us know at trashmail@fairfaxcounty.gov. Be advised most private collectors will respond faster about their services than our Solid Waste Management Program personnel.
