From print to online

For at least three decades, Fairfax County Public Library has been collecting language-learning and test preparation materials. Today, we are adding to our collection in more languages than ever. Many publishers have also moved to online versions of their materials, meaning they are available to cardholders 24/7.

Benefits of online language-learning materials include the ability to quickly update changing content and expand the languages offered. The transition from printed to online materials benefits users by offering the most current content, access to materials anywhere at any time and the inclusion of multi-media capabilities appropriate to the content and for different learning styles.

  • Mango Languages - For globetrotters and armchair travelers alike, this website, also available as an app, offers conversational language learning in over 70 languages, from Arabic to Yiddish, including English for speakers of other languages. Get started: bit.ly/fcpl-language-ecourses
     
  • Transparent Language Online – Includes English language learning materials for speakers of 34 different languages and a collection of 120 languages for English speakers, including 24 indigenous languages.   • Read It! - Provides adapted material to facilitate research for readers of all ages who have a basic understanding of English literacy. Users can access articles and reference sources covering science, math, history, culture, civics, literature and life skills topics, while developing reading and study skills.
