The Local Library – A Taxpayer’s Best Friend

Tax season. It’s a time of year most people dread, well except maybe accountants. From “am I filling out the right forms?” to “can I claim that as a deduction?” the questions surrounding doing your taxes can quickly get overwhelming. But they don’t have to be when you come to the library!

Fairfax County Public Library offers many free resources for community members looking for information and resources to file their United States federal, Virginia state and Fairfax County local taxes. With printable forms, useful links and more, a complete guide of tax-related resources can be found at bit.ly/FCPL_Tax. Keep reading for a quick highlight of what’s available in the guide and at our branches.

Forms, Forms and More Forms

In addition to links for accessing printable versions of tax forms, several FCPL branches also have stock of printed federal forms and instructions available for community members to pick up between the months of January and April. Availability varies by branch, but most have the following available:

  • 1040 - U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
  • 1040-SR - U.S. Tax Return for Seniors
  • Instructions for Forms 1040, 1040-SR and Schedules 1-3

Occasionally, branches will have other tax forms as well as forms in Spanish, but it is recommended that patrons call each branch to inquire before coming in person.

Please note than branches DO NOT have physical copies of Virginia state tax forms. However, FCPL cardholders can download and print copies of both federal and state forms using the library’s public computers and printers for 15 cents per page. Several branches also have reproducible copies of some federal tax forms available for photocopying, also at a rate of 15 cents per page.

Tax Help with an Actual Person – For Free!

Every year as we approach the filing deadline, certain FCPL branches host volunteers from NOVA Tax Aide and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to provide dedicated tax help, and in some cases preparation, to individuals with low income. For the 2026 filing season, volunteers will be available for tax preparation at:

  • Tuesdays from 4-8 p.m.
  • Wednesdays from 1-5 p.m.
  • Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Herndon Fortnightly Library (appointments may be required)

  • Mondays from 4pm – 8pm
  • Wednesdays from 12pm - 4pm
  • Saturdays from 10am – 2pm
  • Herndon Fortnightly Library also hosts the organization’s do-it-yourself tax help program on Tuesdays from 4-7 p.m.
  • Monday-Saturday from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Monday-Wednesday from 5-8 p.m.
