Crafting A Community

How Teens Can Find Their Place and Their People at the Library

To many teenagers, the local library may just seem like a place to do homework or hang out after school while waiting for a ride. But for those interested in arts and crafts, the library can be a second home – a place to where they can gather with like-minded peers to express themselves, both creatively and emotionally, through Fairfax County Public Library’s countless crafting programs.

What Research Shows

From knitting and crocheting to origami and collages, FCPL hosts programs and presentations for crafters of all ages, but these programs can be especially beneficial to teens and preteens. According to research performed on behalf of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Adobe Foundation, participating in a creative activity can help young people find a sense of identity or purpose, as well as a sense of belonging in their community. The same study also cites an improved sense of confidence, reduced stress or anxiety, and improvement in overall mental well-being as benefits of participation.

Types of Crafting Programs You Can Find at Your Library

With 23 branches spread throughout the county, FCPL makes it easy for teens to find crafting opportunities and experience these benefits where they live. Most of our crafting programs are recurring events, where teens can come weekly or monthly to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and connect with others who enjoy the same hobbies. These include groups for knitting, crocheting, papercrafts, quilting, embroidery, visual journaling and more.

Many of our branches often host one-day programs or short series, where teens can take part in a unique experience surrounding a particular craft project or art style. Take a quick look at FCPL’s online event calendar, which shows upcoming programs featuring jewelry making, painting, drawing, origami, collage, and miniature model making among others.

While these programs cater to both teens and adults, there are also several recurring events specifically for teens alone, such as Kings Park Library’s Teen Craft and Chill program, Chantilly Regional Library’s Teen Art Club and Martha Washington Library’s Bad Art Afternoon For Teens. Events and series are always being added, so check the calendar regularly or talk to a staff member at your local branch.
