February is National Library Lovers Month! As library staff, it is no surprise that we love libraries, and we hope you do too. Why not take a moment this month to swing by your local Fairfax County Public Library branch and share that love with our hardworking staff? Here are some suggestions on how:
Easy Ways to Show Your Love for FCPL
- Decorate a Library Valentine
Throughout the month, FCPL branches will have coloring sheets available for visitors to decorate and write what they love most about their library. Check in at the information desk when you arrive to see if your branch has sheets available. - Nominate Someone for a Staff Excellence Award
From February 2-15, members of the public can nominate FCPL staff members to be recognized for their hard work as part of our annual Staff Excellence Awards. Recipients of this award exemplify the Library’s core values and provide exceptional service to our visitors. Learn more about this award and nominate a staff member here. - Write to Your Elected Officials
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors oversees FCPL in several ways. Most importantly, they appoint our Board of Trustees that dictates Library policy and procedures, and they set the Library’s annual budget, which allows us to buy books, host programs and so much more. By writing to your elected county supervisor to share how much you support the Library, you are not only making our staff look good, but you are also letting our county’s leaders know that FCPL is important to our community and should be a priority when voting on what is best for you and all of us here in Fairfax County. Find out who your county supervisor is and learn how to write to them here. Live in the City of Fairfax, Town of Vienna or Town of Herndon? Your representatives would love to hear how you benefit from our libraries too. - Volunteer
We always need helping hands at the library! Children as young as 12 years old can serve as official FCPL volunteers in a variety of ways. From shelving books to helping with programs, more information about volunteering at one of our branches can be found on our website. - Join a Friends of the Library Group
FCPL’s Friends of the Library groups are non-profit organizations that support our branches. These dedicated volunteers promote our libraries in the community and raise funds through book sales. Proceeds from their efforts go to assist branches in hosting programs and purchasing additional materials not covered by the library budget. Most of our branches have Friends groups and they are always looking for new members to join them. Learn more about all our Friends groups here. - Tag Us on Social Media
Sharing your great experiences at one our branches not only makes us feel great, it helps spread the word about all the fun things happening at FCPL! If you had a memorable experience at one of our branches and want to share it with others online, don’t forget to tag us! Our social media handles are @fairfaxcountylibrary for Facebook and @fairfaxlibrary for Instagram and X. - Attend a Program
Sometimes sharing your love for the library can be as easy as showing up. Our library staff put a lot of work and planning into the wide variety of free programs we host. Seeing the smiling faces of attendees enjoying themselves brings a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction to our team and reminds us why we love our jobs. Find your next hobby or learn something new on our event calendar here. - Say Thank You
This is the easiest of them all. Next time you are at one of our branches, say thank you to the library staff you see. It may seem small, but you would be surprised at how much two little words can make someone feel good about themselves.
