Friends of Richard Byrd Library

We Wish We Could but We Can't

Fairfax County Public Library branches cannot accept donations for the duration of the current COVID-19 health crisis. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Richard Byrd Library

In January 1956, Springfield's only library service was an outdated bookmobile that served the rural community. It is no coincidence that January, 1956 is also the date the Friends of the Richard Byrd Library was founded. This group raised $6,400 to cover rent, utilities and maintenance for a period of one year, as well as shelving, chairs, bamboo curtains and a librarian's desk.

By December 1957, just a year and a half after the Friends united, Springfield was ready to assume its financial obligations for the library branch. A lease was signed for space on Backlick Road. The present building was dedicated in 1965. The Friends of the Richard Byrd Library continue to be active in the Springfield community after 69 years.

Mission Statement

The Friends of Richard Byrd Library are dedicated to making the library and its services known to all segments of the community and to encourage the branch's use as a cultural and community center.

Accomplishments

The Friends of Richard Byrd Library underwrite programs of general interest to the community including children’s programming, author talks with book signings, Legos in the Library, children’s and adult crafting programs, Summer Reading Festival, book sale coupons for summer reading program participants, periodical subscriptions, English conversation group, and other special performers during the year.

The Friends also support the annual Fall for the Book Festival, the Fairfax Library Foundation, and we share donated books with multiple community agencies.
